In keeping with the organisation’s traditions of helping new migrants to settle in Australia, since 2006 JewishCare NSW has held Citizenship Ceremonies at which over 100 members of the community have had their citizenship conferred.
On 30 June, 13 conferees from 8 countries over 4 continents together with family and friends attended a ceremony at Fischl House at which Malcolm Turnbull Member for Wentworth officiated.
JewishCare’s President Eva Fischl OAM spoke about her own journey having been brought to Australia from war torn Europe over 60 years ago by The American Joint Distribution Committee (the largest Jewish humanitarian organisation in the world) and JewishCare (Australian Jewish Welfare Society as it was then called). She spoke of how this move helped rebuild her life which is the theme of the upcoming development of a new purpose built headquarters for JewishCare in Saber Street Bondi Junction at the site of the old Burger Centre. “Rebuilding lives is what JewishCare does more than any organisation in our community and the new building will help us to be even more effective and efficient” Eva said.
The ceremony was very poignant for many attendees and Gad Weinbach who attended with family and friends remarked “The ceremony was lovely; I will remember this day until the day I die”.
Others commented on the wonderful feel of the event and the show which was due in large part to the wonderful music provided by Frankie and Tim from The Next Best Thing band. They sang: Advance Australia Fair, Still Call Australia Home, Land Down Under and Al kol Ale
